As I've said on other posts, the COVID-19 pandemic has massively increased my workload so I haven't had any leisure time, which is why I didn't write any in 2020.Hannah Katehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03242167746990058979noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4741080303395651095.post-55881480513132349862021-04-06T18:35:45.244+01:002021-04-06T18:35:45.244+01:00Two years and no Poirot posts.

Is there a connection between 'Harlequin's Lane' and Christie's temporary disappearance? Was she working through some issues that she herself had experienced? I guess we'll never really know.Hannah Katehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03242167746990058979noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4741080303395651095.post-9472592336299030332020-07-18T11:18:25.191+01:002020-07-18T11:18:25.191+01:00Just finished listening to "Harlequin's L...Just finished listening to "Harlequin's Lane". The story, above all of them, makes no sense. If anyone can explain it to me (why does she kill herself, when she has promised to go with the prince?), I'd be grateful. Agree that Harley Quin develops, as the stories in the collection progress and further detach from reality, into a psychopomp. If these are Agatha's favorites, I suspect it's because she felt free to let loose her inner cray cray.shillahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04289804991278453725noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4741080303395651095.post-87380314468965072072020-05-09T07:59:21.973+01:002020-05-09T07:59:21.973+01:00Just wanted to say I came across your website toda...Just wanted to say I came across your website today and I really enjoyed this article in particular. Jennifer Jones (Duel in the Sun) and Joseph Cotten (Since You Went Away) star in this tender and poetic tale that is enthralling from its touching beginning to its haunting conclusion. When struggling artist Eben Adams (Cotten) meets the beautiful and mysterious Jennie Appleton (Jones), he is instantly captivated. Before long, Jennie has become his great muse and he is enjoying success and bliss beyond his dreams. But there is a price to pay for such elation, and soon Eben must face the truth about who Jennie really is. Based on an outstanding novel by Robert Nathan (The Bishop’s Wife) with a first-class production supervised by David O. Selznick (I’ll Be Seeing You), this most unforgettable love story was directed by Hollywood veteran William Dieterle (The Devil and Daniel Webster) and features a stellar supporting cast which includes acting royalties Ethel Barrymore (The Spiral Staircase) and Lillian Gish (The Whales of August).

- Toby FlendersonAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4741080303395651095.post-73758069031294739882019-07-04T17:59:40.948+01:002019-07-04T17:59:40.948+01:00Hi Toby,

I'm fascinated by the stories, as they're quite unlike her other work. I'm not sure you can really call them 'detective' stories, but I love your comparison with a Debussy melody! Perhaps that's why they've never been properly adapted... how could you capture someone like Mr Quin on film/TV?Hannah Katehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03242167746990058979noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4741080303395651095.post-66246764876069238902019-06-25T21:51:22.194+01:002019-06-25T21:51:22.194+01:00Hi -

I thought it was marvelous.

I have always considered the Quin stories as the most ethereal stories I have ever read. A literary version of a Debussy melody wafting in through an open window on a late summer's afternoon.

Sometimes I have to read passages multiple times to figure out what is going on. And even then, I am not sure I am comprehending what it going on. I think when Quin shows up, my mind gets clouded over.

Like Mandrake The Magician gesturing hypnotically, or Lamont Cranston befuddling the bad guys, my mind is taken over and I am not sure what is happening.

I found every subsequent rereading, new information rises up to my consciousness. Which makes these books the best value for the money!

Thank you again for your insightful scholarship.

- Toby FlendersonAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
